Punjabi Lobia Masala is a North Indian style curry recipe made using Black eyes beans or Lobia. A perfect recipe to add lentils to your diet. Lobia Masala pairs well with roti, paratha, and jeera rice.

In the Indian language, Lobia is popularly known as Chawla/Chawli. Lobia beans are a very nutritional and a great source of vegetarian protein. In addition to this, it is a great option and adds a nice twist to the meal.

In this recipe, I have used onion and tomatoes for the Punjabi gravy but this can be easily made with no onion and no garlic.

Lobia Masala | Punjabi Lobia Curry

  1. Soak lobia beans a night before or for at least 6-8 hours.
  2. Next morning, drain the water and pressure cook it with fresh water for 4-5 whistles.
  3. In a kadhai, heat oil - add hing, jeera, dried red chilies, chopped onions. Sauté till onions get cooked a bit.
  4. Add in chopped tomatoes and cook till it becomes soft. Now add all the masalas and salt.
  5. Cook till oil starts releasing and now add this tadka to the cooked lobia beans.
  6. Adjust the water as required. Cook it for another 4-5 minutes. Garnish with chopped dhaniya and serve with roti or rice.
