Curd Rice Recipe | How to make Curd rice at home

Curd rice recipe is a popular South Indian dish that is served in a South Indian thali or in a temple. Curd rice is a simple preparation of cooked rice mixed with curd and then a tadka is added to it. There are so many ways of making it but I have learned this particular recipe from my Mom.

Easy, quick and simple to make, this Curd rice recipe doesn’t require many ingredients. It is one of those recipes that can be counted as Comfort Food. Not only Curd Rice tastes yummy but this is quite a healthy option.

Curd rice or dahi chawal is given to people who are through stomach problems and loose motions. As Curd rice is easy to digest therefore it is recommended for people having loose motions.

Curd when heated with Chawal and after adding tempering/tadka, it’s nature gets changed and thus it’s not harmful to the body. Anyone who is suffering from constipation, diarrhea, loose motion can have it.

Curd rice can be eaten after meals or as a meal with papad. It’s a wholesome meal and nutritious too.

Curd rice is a popular South Indian recipe which is made from cooked rice and dahi. Tempered with curry leaves and mustard seeds, it's a perfect wholesome meal.

Preparing Rice
  1. Wash the rice 2-3 thoroughly with water. Soak it into clean water for 15-20 minutes.
  2. Now Boil water in a vessel, add salt and cook the raw rice (after draining the soaked water) just the way you do it. Once the rice is cooked, strain the excess water and keep the rice aside to cool down.
Preparing Tadka
  1. In a kadhai, heat oil - add rai, curry leaves, urad daal, chana daal, and slit green chili. Sauté them on low flame so that they don't get burned. Keep stirring, we just want a golden color on chana and urad dal. It will take 1-2 minutes.
  2. Add cooked rice and mix it with the tadka.
  3. Finally, add the curd and stir it well. Cook it for another 2-3 minutes. If the consistency is not liquid or desired, add more curd.
  4. Add salt and serve it hot.
Recipe Notes

Notes:

  • Add cashew nuts if want to make it richer and serve it to guests.
  • Adding chana dal and urad dal is optional, can be avoided if making for kids.
  • A bit of sugar can be added, it will enhance the taste.
  • It's important to take fresh curd. Do not take sour curd.
