We all make faces when we have to eat “Chilke wali Moong dal”. Comment below if you agree. As a kid, I literally used to loathe Chilke wali moong dal. But now things have changed and so has life. Adulting has hit me hard and I have realized the importance of eating it. There are so many nutritional benefits attached to it and the best thing about Chilke wali moong dal is it gets digest easily.

Ever since I have started cooking I thought why not give this boring dal a twist and serve it with chatpata tadka. If made with good tadka, trust me this dal tastes YUM. You will never make face while having it. The best way of having this dal is by mashing it in roti and have it with achar. At least that’s how I eat it. Ah, it tastes heaven and you won’t feel guilty too.

Simple, quick and very easy to make – Chilke Wali Moong Dal is loved by all. Try making it for your elder at home and I am sure they will be surprised too. Adjust the spiciness according to your taste. That’s it!

  1. In a pressure cooker, add soaked moong dal and water. Pressure cook it well. It will take approx 2-3 whistles.
  2. Once the cooker is cooled down, whisk the daal using a laddle.
  3. In a kadhai, add oil + ghee. You can either use just ghee or oil. I use both as it gives a great taste and flavour. Once oil is heated add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, hing, split green chillies, bay leaf and dried red chili.
  4. Saute for a while and add chopped tomatoes. Cook tomatoes really well till they become a bit soft.
  5. Now is the time to add masala. Add haldi, red chilli powder and garam masala. Mix everything well.
  6. Now add the cooked daal and add water according to your preference. Add salt and mix it well.
  7. Let it boil for few more minutes and then garnish with chopped coriander leaves. Serve hot with roti, sabzi and achar.
  8. Serve it with a dallop of ghee. Tada!
Recipe Notes

Add chopped onions if you like.

Make it just with tomatoes if you are not fond of onion and garlic.

Adjust the masala according to your taste and preference.
